Shelley’s bio:

Shelley is proud of her counter-culture roots having been touched by the spiritual idealism of the 1960s. She jumped into the moment with both feet and became the littlest Earth Mother after deciding having a baby would be in keeping with her vision of a natural, simple and soul-centered life. Her first child was born when she was 18 years of age in 1969 and the second followed in 1971.

She joined an intentional community and lived under the tutelage of an Oxford educated East Indian teacher. The group honored the world’s religions and gave  them serious study.  She was also a member of The Gandhi-King Fellowship and has maintained a philosophical resonance with these two pioneers in non-violent social change.

While raising her children Shelley worked in the corporate world eventually climbing to management positions. First Carrows Restaurants, Inc. and later at Kinko’s Graphics Inc. she oversaw accounting and human resources as the two expediential growth companies went through fast moving metamorphoses in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Since the 1990s Shelley’s work has centered on women and children.  She was the Assistant Director of KidsCentre in Seattle for 4 years, a large childcare facility which cares for 85 children ages 6 weeks to 4 years.

In 2000 her attention shifted to birthing women and newborns and she became a doula. As a certified hypnotherapist she believes the mind-body connection is critical at birth.  Respect for mother and child, an awareness of the natural intelligence of the body and the power of love and non-violence to create a new way of birthing are her passions.  She teaches a holistic childbirth preparation class with an emphasis on using hypnosis as a bridge into the natural trance of labor.

She feels we have the capability to transform human life with a spiritual sensitivity to birth.  She is thrilled to be joining forces with Debby Takikawa to launch BABY! International Film Festival and is anticipating a juicy collaboration.
